We visited Irene Dairy Farm in October this year and spent the afternoon there with close friends of ours. I can not think of another word to describe this afternoon than lovely.
They have wide open spaces with the nicest, greenest grass I have seen in a long time and lovely trees for shade. You can take your own blanket, but you are not allowed to take any picnic basket with you. However, you can buy everything you need at the Farm Shop (they have some really tasty snacks as well as cheese, milk and a few other items produced on the farm).
There are 2 restaurants. The Barn and The Deck. The Deck is situated close to the shop and The Barn at the play ground. We enjoyed lunch at The Barn restaurant. They have sprayers, spraying you lightly with water, cooling you down on a hot day and it is wonderful!
They built a pathway around the farm where you can stroll through and watch the cows and even feed the calves. It was great seeing the kids interact with them. Later the afternoon we could watch them milk the cows and this was very entertaining to the little ones
In my opinion it is a bit pricey to buy everything inside, but not too expensive. The restaurants is quite pricey as well with a can of coke making you go home with R20 less. But entrance is for free.
All in all this is a great outing for the whole family. It is a place with peace and quite in the middle of the busy city where you can just relax and take in some fresh air. On Saturdays there is also the Irene Village Market with arts and crafts where you can go and do some birthday- or Christmas shopping.
I really enjoyed it and I can not wait to go back!
